Famlies,
I am switching to ClassDojo. I will no longer update this webpage. General links, such as the school calendar, Scholastic, learning sites, and lunch menu will remain here. I will no longer post photos or newsletters here.
I hope you will join us on ClassDojo. :)

Lunch Menu
Click on the lunch tray for this month's lunch menu.
You are welcome to join your child for lunch. Please meet your child outside the cafeteria doors at lunch time (11:35). If you would like to purchase a school lunch, please call the office before 9:00am with your lunch selection. I highly recommend that you make this a surprise. Unfortunately, unexpected events sometimes cause parents to miss lunch dates with their child. This can be an upsetting situation for even the most mature child.

Class Book Orders
Sometimes the right book is all it takes to nurture a child's love of reading. That's why I'm pleased that our class is participating in Scholastic Book Clubs this year.
Scholastic offers just-right, affordable books for our age and reading levels.
Click the Scholasitc Logo above, to link to Scholastic.com
I plan to distribute book orders will be in September, November, February, and possibly April. This may change based on interest level, or other unexpected circumstances.
Paper orders must be completed and sent in with payment (check written to Scholastic Book Clubs only) by the due date. On-line orders may be placed, and paid for by credit card, until midnight on the due date.

PSE PTO
The PSE PTO is a force to be reckoned with! Our PTO works harder for our school than any other PTO in the area! Of course, I may be biased. ;o)
Our PTO keeps the calendar full of fun activities and opportunities. They support the school, the teachers, and the children. Our PTO funds many important items and activities for our school through FUN fundraisers, like the Basketball Shoot-Out and Orange Leaf Night. I encourage you to join PTO, as your membership also supports the PTO's good work!

Happy, Happy Birthday!
I will send a reminder note, about a week in advance, letting you know what day we will celebrate. This may not be on the exact date of their birthday if there is a conflict with our classroom schedule. You may send non-food "treats" to school with your child, or you may drop them off in the office prior to our recess/lunch block. We will share the treat and wish your child a Happy Birthday as time permits later in the afternoon.
** Birthdays that do not occur during the calendar school year will be celebrated on a special day near the end of the school year. I will work with the student to choose a special date to celebrate their "summer birthday". I will notify parents, in the spring, when those special days have been chosen.

How's That Handwriting?
If your handwriting could use some work, check out the stroke chart by clicking the pencil cup. :o)
First Grade Sight Words
Each first grade student is expected to master reading a specific set of sight words. Sight words are mastered when read with speed and confidence without need for assistance or "sounding out". Students are expected to read sight words in isolation and in context, and should understand the meaning of sight words. First Grade students should master lists A and B by the end of 1st quarter, list C by the end of 2nd quarter, list D by the end of 3rd quarter, and list E by the end of 4th quarter. Lists F, G, and H are 2nd grade lists. Students are encouraged to work on these lists once they have mastered all first grade words. Click on the reading kids to view our lists of sight words for the year.
Meet Mrs. Cruzen (a.k.a. "Mrs. C")
Welcome to our class! My name is Kris Cruzen. The 2018-19 school year is my is my 21st year of teaching First Grade at Progress South. I earned my BS Ed from University of Missouri, St. Louis and my MA Ed from Lindenwood University. My wonderful husband, Mark, and I have been married 33 years! I'll probably keep him around for another 30 or so years. ;o) We play competitive trivia on a team a couple of times each week with our lovely daughter, Melissa and our fantastic son-in-law Colbei. This May, on the day after the last day of school, our first grandson, Tobei was born. Having the entire summer break to snuggle and play was such a treat! I am a Chicago native, and yes, I am a loyal Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks fan. :o) Don't worry, I root for the Cards when they are not playing against my Cubbies. :o) I also enjoy scrapbooking, swimming, movies, photography, dancing, reading, and spending time with my family, friends, and our goofy dog, Sparky. I am a self-diagnosed emoticon over-user :o) and if you hadn't already guessed by this page... my favorite color is PURPLE! You can contact me by email at [email protected], by putting a note in your child's Daily Folder, or by leaving a detailed message with the fabulous PSE office staff. Thank you for sharing your clever kid with me! I look forward to growing and learning with them this year! :o)
